The following paragraphsbriefly describethe major functions of the board.A more detaileddiscussionof board
functions is included in Chapter 3, Hardware Operation, and Chapter4, Board Operation and Programming.The
board setupis describedin Chapter l, Board Settings.
Analog-to-DigitalConversion
The analog-to-digital (A./D) circuitry receivesup to l6 single-endedanaloginputs and convertstheseinputs
into l2-bit digital data words which can then be read and/or transferredto PC memory.
The analog input voltage range is jumper-selectablefor bipolar rangesof -5 to +5 volts or -10 to +10 volts, or a
unipolar rangeof 0 to +10 volts. The board is factory setfor -5 to +5 volts. Overvoltageprotection to +35 volts is
provided at the inputs. An on-boardresistorconfigurablegain circuit lets you customizethe input gain for all
channelsto any value greaterthan I by adding the appropriatecomponentsasdescribednearthe end ofChapter l.
A,/D conversionsare performed in 5 microseconds,and the maximum throughputrate is 125 kHz. Conversions
are controlled through software,by an on-boardpacerclock, or by an externaltrigger brought onto the board
through the VO connector.
The converted datacan be transferredthrough the PC databus to PC memory in one of two ways: by using the
microprocessoror by direct memory access(DMA). The mode of transferis software-selectableand the DMA
channelis chosenbyjumper settingson the board.The PC databus is usedto read and/or transferdatato PC
memory. In the DMA transfermode, you can make continuoustransfersdirectly to PC memory without going
through the processor.
Digital-to-AnalogConversion(ADA1210Only)
The digital-to-analog (D/A) circuitry on the ADAl2l0 featurestwo independentl2-bit analogoutput channels
with individuallyjumper-selectableoutputrangesof -5 to +5 volts,-10 to +10 volts,0 to +5 volts,or 0 to +10 volts.
Both outputs are simultaneouslyupdatedby writing to an VO port. Accessthrough DMA is not available.
8254Timer/Counter
An 8254 programmableinterval timer containsthree l6-bit, 8-MHz timer/countersto supporta wide rangeof
timing and counting functions. Two of the timer/countersare cascadedand can be usedinternally for the pacer
clock. The third is available for counting applications,or it can be cascadedto the other two timer/counters.
Digital VO
The 1210has l6 TTUCMOS-compatible digital VO lines which can be directly interfacedwith externaldevices
or signals to senseswitch closures,trigger digital events,or activatesolid-staterelays.Theselines are provided by
